Choose a cake box by the measured footprint of the finished cake and its board, then check the usable height with the lid closed. An inch label or an external box measurement cannot confirm that fit. Include frosting, fruit, flowers and toppers in your measurements, and approve a packed sample before ordering in bulk.
Measure the complete cake, not just the baking tin
A cake starts with a recipe size, but the packed product includes more than the sponge. A board may extend beyond the icing, while a decoration may project beyond the board. Record the largest dimensions of the exact version you plan to sell.
- Measure the board. Record its diameter, or its length and width, including tabs or handles. Note its thickness and shape.
- Measure the finished footprint. Include icing, piped borders, fruit and decorations that extend sideways. Use whichever is larger: this footprint or the board.
- Measure the total height. Start underneath the board and finish at the highest decoration. Include any support or insert that will sit inside the package.
- Record product variation. Measure several finished examples. A hand-piped border or fruit topping may vary between batches; the packaging needs to suit the agreed finished specification.
Keep every measurement in one unit, preferably millimetres, and label the drawing clearly. A top view and side view are often more useful to a packaging supplier than a photograph alone.
Understand the four measurements on a cake box
- External dimensions describe the outside of the package. They help with shelf and shipping-carton planning, but do not establish the space available for the cake.
- Internal dimensions describe space inside the package. Ask where they were measured: the board seating area, the opening and the upper cover may have different widths.
- Cover dimensions describe the lid itself. A cover diameter is not automatically the usable diameter at board level.
- Usable closed height is the space above the actual board seating position when the package is assembled. Check it where the highest decorations will sit, including near sloping or curved parts of the lid.
There is no single clearance allowance that suits every cake. Agree the required room around the finished product after reviewing the decoration, loading method and sample fit. Do not subtract guessed wall thicknesses from an external measurement to create an unverified internal size.
Read product sizes as a starting point
These FEIQI examples show why the type of measurement matters. The figures below describe the listed package specifications; they are not promises that a cake or board of the same nominal size will fit.
| Product | Published measurements | What to check in a sample |
|---|---|---|
| 6-inch Round PET Cake Box | Overall Ø175 × 92 mm; inner Ø145 mm; cover Ø155 mm | Board seating, the location of the inner-diameter measurement and closed clearance above decorations |
| FQ255 Tall PET Cake Box | Overall 308 × 130 mm | Internal board area and usable closed height; these are not established by the external size |
| FQ-305 12-inch PET Cake Box | Overall 349 × 124 mm | Actual board and decorated-cake fit; the 12-inch name does not replace internal measurements |
Approve the fit with an assembled sample
Use the intended board, cake and decorations together. First, load the product using the same method your packing team will use. Check that the board sits in its intended position without forcing the package.
Next, close the lid fully and inspect the cake from above and around the sides. Confirm that the lid and closure do not press against icing or decorations. Reopen it to look for contact marks that may be difficult to see through the cover.
Finally, review the packed sample through your actual handling sequence, including lifting, display and placement in the proposed outer carton. Record the accepted dimensions and sample reference so future orders use the same specification.
Cupcakes need a separate cavity check
The PET Cupcake Clamshell Container is listed at 225 × 180 × 60 mm and has 12 cavities. Those overall dimensions do not specify the diameter of each cavity. Test the actual liner and cupcake base, how the cupcake sits in the well, spacing between decorated tops and clearance under the closed lid. Twelve cavities do not establish a universal cupcake size.

Frequently asked questions
Does a 6-inch cake automatically fit a 6-inch cake box?
No. Compare the finished cake, board and decorations with verified internal measurements. The nominal inch description alone does not confirm usable space.
Can I use the external box height as the maximum cake height?
No. Measure usable height above the board seating position with the lid closed. The lid profile and board thickness affect the fit.
Should I remove tall toppers before packing?
Decide this in your packing specification. If a topper stays attached, include its full height and width in the fit review. If supplied separately, test that packing arrangement too.
Can one approved box cover every cake in my range?
Only after checking each finished format against the approved package. Changes to boards, icing or decorations can change the space required, even when the sponge size stays the same.
